"Ali Baba, in a blue-serge coat!… God-forsaken fool!"
CHAPTER XIII
One day Ruth caught the patient's eyes following her about; but there was no
question in the gaze, no interest; so she pretended not to notice. The flowers upon the mantel-shelf were withered and
drooping—she had gathered them. "Be so good as to let Caliban out, Mr. \" Lucy replied meekly. Lucy snatched it up and put it in
her pack. Spare him!—pity me!"
With this she arose, and, taking up the infant, was about to proceed down stairs,
when she was alarmed by hearing the street-door opened, and the sound of heavy
footsteps entering the house. Hetty, looking out of the window—she always smoked her after-breakfast
cigarette at the window for the benefit of the less advanced section of
Morningside Park society—and trying not to raise objections, saw Miss Stanley
going down toward the shops. "Red apples and snow!" she sent back at him, her face suddenly transfixed by
some inner glory. "A bad business this, Van," observed Baptist, with a prolonged shake of the head. "The shoulder-clappers!" added a lady, who, in her anxiety to join the party, had
unintentionally substituted her husband's nether habiliments for her own
petticoats.
