Hilton Head Island

South Carolina

In the mid 1950s few people in the U.S. had ever heard of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina—the second largest barrier island on the East coast, with 12 miles of unspoiled Atlantic beaches. A young Charles Fraser, however, had big plans for this beautiful Lowcountry paradise, characterized by serene tidal marshlands, ancient moss-draped oaks, a variety of subtropical palms, and an abundance of delicious shell-fish and other salt-water seafood, along with sail-boating, yachting and world-class deep-sea fishing. For good measure, add a mild subtropical climate and you have the perfect ingredients for one of the top 10 golf, tennis and beach destinations in the world.

Thus, when the first bridge connecting Hilton Head Island to the mainland opened in the late ‘50s the stage was set for steady, but quality-controlled, growth of luxury ocean-side resorts and private, upscale golf communities. Currently, the island has nearly 35,000 full and part-time residents, and when the resorts are over-flowing during peak seasons, more than 50,000 people celebrate life on this model resort and residential haven. Founded and developed by Fraser circa 1960, Sea Pines was Hilton Head’s first resort and residential community and was later joined by Palmetto Dunes and Shipyard Plantation as the Island’s major ocean-front resorts.

With Harbour Town Golf Links, home of the PGA Tour’s MCI Heritage Classic, leading the way Hilton Head Island boasts 21 outstanding golf courses—8 private and 13 resort/daily fee— designed by such honored archictects as Dye, Fazio, Nicklaus, Palmer, Player, Jones, Cupp and Hills. Long Cove Club, also designed by Dye, has been the site of two national USGA tournaments, and like Harbour Town, is rated among the 100 Greatest Courses in America by Golf Digest Magazine. Across the bridge, extending 10 miles west of the island, more than 20,000 people reside in a variety of communities wrapped around the quaint village of Bluffton. On the north side of the highway are some of the finest, private golf and residential communities in the Southeast such as Belfair, Berkeley Hall and Oldfield. Bordered by the tidal marshlands of the Calibogue Sound and the pristine Colleton and Okatie Rivers, this collection of communities features world-class golf, community and private docks, majestic maritime forests, distinctive luxury homes, finely-appointed clubhouses and virtually every other amenity imaginable.

Daufuskie Island, just one mile across the Calibogue Sound from Harbour Town, is an integral and enchanting part of the Hilton Head scene. WithDaufuskie Island Resort, Haig Point, a private golf and residential community, and native islanders with a fascinating history and culture, Daufuskie Island is one of the most beautiful and fascinating destinations in the U.S.

In total, the greater Hilton Head area is home to more than 45 golf courses, with about half open to visitors, and the other half located in private golf and residential communities. Nearly 20 of these courses are also ranked among the Top 50 Golf Courses in South Carolina by South Carolina Magazine.

Golf, however, is not the only attraction in the Hilton Head area. Tennis, water skiing, wind-surfing, fishing, biking, cruising and just hanging out at the Harbour Town, Shelter Cove and South Beach marinas can be day-long adventures. Shopping, sight-seeing and dining-out are also among the favorite past-times around the island, with great seafood as the main fare at more than 200 restaurants, ranging from local gathering spots to fine dining on the water.

Hilton Head Island is located at the southern tip of South Carolina and is accessible by air to Savannah, Georgia and Hilton Head airports. By car, the bridge to the island is just 20 miles east of Interstate 95, exit 8.
